A little glimpse into Hella Sound and some thoughts on the Music Industry.
Hey all, just wanted to take a second to share with you a little glimpse at the innards of Hella Sound.
There’s a couple reasons.
First: I think it’s important that you know where the music is coming from. This company was founded by one guy with an idea and the desire to make it happen. Over time I hope we expand and grow and work with new music talent (is that you? hit me up! .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)). But we’re just a small company. As such, know that this is our passion, and we’ll strive to deliver the highest quality music and the best service possible. We are entirely open to input, feedback, criticism and professions of undying love. Seriously. Don’t hesitate to contact us at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)—we’d love to talk with you.
Second: It’s pretty common knowledge that the music industry as we’ve known it for the last 5 decades is completely jacked up. Somewhere in the 80s or so the big record labels turned from being cool music sources into The Bad Guy. Executive-level excess and artist exploitation became a recurring theme in media literature. This worsened in the 90s.
The real Beginning of the End, in my opinion, was when digitizing audio files and sharing them with whoever you wanted became drop dead easy. Napster was the first mainstream peer-to-peer tool that enabled people to get tons and tons of music without spending a dime. Things have gone downhill for Big Music since.
People have different motivations for sharing music files. Some folks don’t really see it as theft; others do, and intentionally do it on some level to “stick it to the man”. Me? I buy music because I think giving or accepting something that’s not mine to give just feels wrong. If it’s opensource, fine, but if its a commercial good then my guilty conscience doesn’t feel right doing it. Hey, what can I say—I was raised Catholic. For those that don’t think throwing our music up on BitTorrent is theft, try to consider the hours and effort that went into each song, and who did the work. And for those that are doing it to intentionally screw The Establishment, trust me, I ain’t The Man. We’re just a a small company creating and selling a product we believe in.
We’re the little guy.
Let's keep it polite and on topic.
