Running with music? Get the lowdown on the perfect gear.

Last week I posted Running with Music: Quest for the Perfect Gear, explaining the plan for this series on optimal gear for folks that like running to music. Yesterday I started on headphones, with Running with Music: Quest for the Perfect Gear - Headphones Overview, laying out what I believe to be the most important aspects of headphone choice for running: form factor, attachment and manufacture details.
Before I elucidate and expressify my thoughts on those three points, we have an all-encompassing, primary thing to consider:
Be safe and sociable, not sorry. Running with impaired senses is no joke. When you are running outside, make sure that you are still able to clearly hear external sounds. This would include traffic, other runners, and any other audio cues you may need to hear to be safe. If you can’t hear conversation-level speech, your music is too loud.
Furthermore, loud sounds can damage your ears—particularly when said loud sounds are right next to or inside your ears. If you enjoy hearing things other than the high-pitched whistle of tinnitus, dial down the volume.
Finally, some folks continue to assume that runners wearing headphones are inconsiderate jerks who won’t hear warnings, or yield a lane when addressed verbally. I strive to be a courteous runner, and I would like for all my fellow running music lovers to prove that we are just as responsible and conscientious—we’re just enjoying ourselves more.
In the next post I’ll examine running headphone form factor, and share what I have found to be the best configurations.
Let's keep it polite and on topic.
