Get the Bonk Out!
September 12, 2008 | in Fitness | 5 Comments
Author and marathoner Amy Güth chats with us about her new site, Bonkless, which seeks to help others deal with all types of athletic bonks.
Writer, runner and friend of Hella Sound, Amy Güth, launched a new site Bonkless this morning that offers tips, tricks, hacks and methods for avoiding the obstacles we all encounter at one time or another. Amy's experience and insight definitely make this a site to watch in the fitness category, and we're excited to see what she comes up with.
I got a chance to chat—literally chat, as in on IM—with Amy about the site and the inspiration behind it. Check it out:
Thanks! All the feedback has been good today; I'm pretty pleased. Not bad for Day One.
Well, I used to have a private blog that I used for a running log, and found myself always adding links and such to gear and gadgets I wanted to remember. So, I had that for maybe a year and a half, and thought I wanted to do something similar but more polished and for people at different fitness levels.
Nice. A one-thing-leads-to-another project. It looks like you've got a good head start.
Thanks! My aim was to hold off announcing it until I had a few posts up, so ppl would understand the site once they visited. I mean, I don't think I could convey much if I had ppl visiting and only one post up.
Yeah, true. "Welcome to Bonkless. See my blogroll? I'll be back tomorrow with more."
I know the "bonk" thing is a phrase a lot of runners use to refer to the point when your liver runs out of glycogen during a marathon, but from the site's "About" it sounds like you are taking a number of meanings for it. Is there a general "bonk" you're hoping to help folks avoid?
All the bonks! Mental bonks, bonk before you start bonks, physical bonks, lack of support bonks, etc.
I've pretty much just taken to using "bonk" in place of "denied!", "screwed" or "obstacle"
"404 This energy resource is not available. Try hitting your back button and doing more hill repeats next time, and maybe you won't bonk again."
Well cool, man. Whatcha got in the pipeline? Any beans to spill, or previews for us inquring minds?
Well! I'm going to be interviews with people doing interesting fitness-related things...
Interviews, gear and gadget reviews, and event coverage, which maybe I'm the most excited about.
The challenge for me is going to be to write to such a range of fitness levels. But, I'm up for that challenge.
Awesome. Your out-of-town running route discovery method is one of the coolest I've ever heard of. It'll be cool to piggyback on a trip via your site.
I'm going to attempt a few new endurance-type sports myself and create short, funny-but-true serial features on Bonkless about how they go. Hopefully that'll take some of the intimidation out of trying new things for some people. It's scary to try something new, but maybe less so if someone is willing to try first and blog about it AND make fun of themsevles a bit along the way. Ha.
One last Q: are those your feet in the masthead graphic? Or are they stunt feet?
Stunt feet indeed, and I tried to cover up the shoe logo in the photo. I'm a New Balance lady.
Right on. Well, gracias for takin' the time to chat. You're off to the Chicago Half Marathon Expo, no?
I am! I'm heading out the Expo here in a sec and will tweet as I go then post about it later this afternoon.
Indeed. Hopefully I'll find some fun new gadgets. The last expo I attended, I ended up with something called a "marathong"
You gotta let me know if they have a Half Marathon Banana Hammock. Probably not something a sensible apparel company would market.

Thanks Noxy’s Notions and Kara! I really should do more interviews this way--it was a hoot.
Amy’s definitely got a unique, creative approach to how to wring a lot out of the running experience, which I think is great. De-bonking is a good thing.

Great interview! I just linked to bonkless. For someone like me just getting back into fitness and wanting to reshape my body, Bonkless is great. I’m definitely back in the newbie fitness category. I’m looking forward to the dish.

@katie
welcome back to fitness! It’s nice in here, isn’t it? Clothes fit better, and the endorphins don’t suck, either.
Good luck on reshapin’!
