Ready for the weekend? We're stepping outside the box this weekend with some odd suggestions and jazz recommendations. Enjoy yourself!
Helllllloooooo Friday!
It was a fantastically productive week here at Hella Sound—how was yours?
Friday's here and the time is right for dancin' in the streets. Here's some ideas for this, the 26th weekend of '08:
- Looking for a new book? Check out goodreads.com. The site invites us to "...Imagine it as a large library that you can wander through and see everyone's bookshelves, their reviews, and their ratings..." Sounds like a good starting point.
- Want to try something really different? Hop into a sensory deprivation floatation tank. It's a profoundly relaxing—even trippy experience, and could be a novel way to recover after your long run. I tried this in Chicago at SpaceTime Tanks, and it did not disappoint.
- Expand your ears. You may already know these selections; if you don't, feel free to thank me later for showing you:
John Coltrane — A Love Supreme

John Coltrane is a monster. The passion and rawness of Coltrane's playing is mind-blowing. But that's just the beginning of the story for this masterpiece album. Drummer Elvin Jones plays from an entirely different planet, holding all things together in the most unexpected and loose ways. MyCoy Tyner's piano work is nothing short of amazing. If you don't know, you better ask somebody.Kurt Elling — Live in Chicago

What a great album for vocal jazz. "Downtown", the opener, gets things started right. If you haven't listened to much jazz, scat or vocalese—as Elling's style is called—don't be put off by the "biddips" and "fadoobys". This is a great album, and these guys haul ass. Also, expect a much, much wider dynamic musical range than most music you're used to listening to: the band goes from the softest and subtlest ballad to full-bore bop at a moment's notice.
Relax, enjoy yourself, recharge your batteries and have a great weekend!
