It's Friday! W00t! Here's some ideas on how to endear yourself to your squeeze, (hopefully) impress a new one, and deal with the summer heat. Also: some new major label picks to tantalize your earhole.
Weekend, here we come!
How was your week? Did you get a lot done? Or was it an endless pile of GAHH? Let us know how it went.
It's friday again, and (if you work a normal Monday-Friday schedule) you're almost free. Here's some ideas on what to do with the 25th weekend of '08:
- Guys, buy your lady some flowers. Why? Because it's a sweet, thoughtful thing to do, and is almost universally well received. Also, you probably suck. I mean, you probably don't suck as a person—as a whole—but you probably have or probably will do something stupid or thoughtless at some point or another. What better way to preemptively make up for your foible than a nice bouquet of flowers?
- Ladies, tell your guy he's cool. Think about it and mean it when you say it—he'll be happy to hear it. If it's sincere, who wouldn't?
- Asking someone out on a first date? What about brunch? I always thought this was a cool, unusual idea for a first date. It's off the beaten path, and hey, who doesn't like brunch? Use Yelp to find a good brunch spot if you don't already have a favorite. If things go well, you can spend the rest of the day together and have a great time. If they don't, you can hook up with your friends and tell them how weird your date was.
- Racing this weekend? Or planning on getting in a long run? Be prepared for hot weather—check out Running in the Heat... by Mindy Solkin. There's some good precautions and advice on there to help you stay healthy and cope with the rising mercury.
- Need something new for your ears? This week's picks are of a heavier variety, the second being a brand-new purchase for me:

I've owned and played this album at very loud levels for quite some time now. Three tracks are worth the purchase of this album: "The Situationist", which is a fantastic progression that grows to a roaring dirge of guitar and vocals; "Christ Size Shoes", a more accessible piece for those that like verse-chorus-verse; and "Third Gear Scratch", with its interesting rhythm and vocal production. Tim Dow offers endlessly entertaining rhythms and drum parts throughout—something I'm always a fan of. I maintain that these guys are better riff creators than actual songwriters, but the feelings this music engenders makes me care less about overall composition. Good stuff.Mastodon — Leviathan

I'm not sure what led me to this choice; I think a friend caught them at a show and was like "WTF?!?". That's enough of an endorsement for me. Song titles include such image-conjuring gems as "Sea Beast", "Megalodon" and "Iron Tusk". At first blush, they sound like something best listened to in a hot-boxed early 70's Camaro. We'll see how this album fares after a few listens.
Relax, enjoy yourself, recharge your batteries and have a great weekend!
