I've always felt that good drummers result from tolerant parents—who else is going to let you make an ungodly loud racket practicing your instrument?

Alas, my folks were not down with it, and I had to pick up what I know once I left the house. And while I'm primarily a guitar player, drums and drummers really are one of the most interesting parts of modern music. Good drummers can provide feel and add detail and texture to any song. Well, any song with drums in it.

This week's offering includes some *great* drummers, as well as some drummers that play a more traditional role, but still keep it down and in its place.
Check out Kenwood Denard's solo in Shake Everything You've Got. Notice how he incorporates the audience's claps into his solo. GENIUS. Soul Coughing's Yuval Gabay is a long-time favorite; he can do busy, he can do sparse, and he's very independent. Calling him "funky" would be missing the point. Homeboy's great. Not a showy player, Silversun Pickups' Christopher Guanlao chooses perfect patterns for song parts, and repeats with economy. What can you say about Trans Am? Pure relentless energy and drive. And finally Jason Gerken of Shiner lays it down with authority. Enjoy!
