Athlete of the Month: John McClung

in the category: Fitness

We went local with this month's featured athlete: fixture of the Houston running community and all-around knowledgeable cat, John McClung.

Athlete of the Month John McClung

Runner and marathon coach John McClung put me through the most thorough shoe fitting I have ever experienced at Luke’s Locker in Houston. During this time we got to talk shop, and John revealed his deep knowledge of the subject of marathon training, gained through years of experience and shared with the Houston runners he coaches.

What do you listen to when you run?

I will either listen to Paul Van Dyk trance music or some other fast-paced music that I can keep the intensity up.

What do you do to fight fatigue when you get the urge to quit?

I will think about how I will feel if I don’t finish (unless of course for safety reasons) and thinking about the prize of accomplishment when I reach the finish.

What’s the craziest conditions you’ve ever run in?

Wow, I don’t know. It’s probably a toss up between:
(1) The Houston Marathon in 1997 when there was sleet and 28 degrees
or
(2) The inaugural Beaumont Gusher Marathon in 2010 where the temperatures started at 70-75 degrees with 100% humidity and then on the second loop the temperature soared to 80-85 degrees with 100% humidity and topped of with a 20 mph head wind.

If you could run anywhere, where would it be?

Monument Valley, Utah

What was the longest distance you’ve ever run?

Sunmart Endurance Trail Run 50K
